Cambridge Baptist Church

Accessible entrance & exterior renewal · Cambridge, NY

An 1844 brick church on West Main Street in Cambridge, NY, presented in 3D: the church as it stands and a proposed accessible entrance and exterior renewal in one scene, with day and night views, a sun study for the north-facing front, the property line, and an itemized pricing board.

01 · Before

The church as it stands

The church was built in 1844 on West Main Street. It is part of the Cambridge Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1978, a short walk from Hubbard Hall.

Both front doors sit about 44 inches above the lawn and are reached only by stairs, so members who use wheelchairs or walkers can't enter on their own.

The After v1 design: a switchback ramp with brick walls and black picket guards to the right-hand door, a gold cross on the tower, a brick sign and new lighting

02 · After v1

A step-free entrance and a renewed front

The original brick, windows, trim and stairs stay. The work:

  • A switchback ramp to the right-hand front door: three runs at 1:12, with landings
  • Brick ramp walls to match the church, with one solid brick wall between the runs
  • 42-inch steel picket guards and 1.5-inch handrails on both sides
  • Along the church, the handrail stands on its own posts, so nothing is anchored into the historic wall
  • Conduit roughed in so an automatic door opener can be added later
  • A gold cross with finials and a standing-seam cap on the bell tower
  • Entry and walkway lighting, with the tower and cross lit at night
  • A brick monument sign, black front doors and shade-tolerant plantings

The ramp layout was designed with reference to the 2025 NYS Building Code for slope, rise, landings, handrails, guards and openings; final compliance verified by a licensed professional. A stamped plan from a licensed architect or engineer is the next step.

Light, day and night

The front of the church faces north and stays in shade all winter, which makes the steps hard to keep clear of ice. The model places the sun by date and time of day, so you can see how little sun the entrance gets in winter and how the church looks after dark.

  • Day and night switch
  • Pick a date and drag through the day, or press play
  • A readout of when the front is in direct sun
  • Entry and walkway lights at night, with the tower and cross lit

Every piece, itemized

The pricing board in the model lists every piece of the project, so members and donors can see each one and choose one to support.

A clear historic review

Before and After v1 side by side make the conversation concrete: what changes, what doesn't, how the brick matches, and what is added to the tower.

A code-informed starting point

The ramp begins from a layout designed with reference to the building code instead of a sketch, ready for a licensed architect or engineer to review and stamp.

One set of numbers

One itemized budget keeps the figures the same everywhere the project is described.

Why winter matters

Day, night and sun-study views show the finished project, and why the north-facing entrance needs a safer route in winter.
